Course
MA in Bharatanatyam is a Masters of Arts program by Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam. The course teaches in-depth the classical dance, Bharatanatyam. It is a combination of bhava, raga, tala and Natya. The Bharatanatyam dancer makes beautiful straight lines or triangles. The artform is divided into two categories pure dance “Nritta” and expressional dance “Nritya.” The whole body and mind of the performer are necessary for the proper performance of this dance.Mahatma Gandhi University syllabus includes topics like Dance Legends and Institutions of Modern India, Theory Traditional Cultures and Folk/Ritual Theatre forms of India, Practical Alarippu and Jatiswaram, Practical Sadbam and Keerthanam,Practical Padam and Thillana, Theory Sanskrit Dance Treatises and Dance Features,Theory History and Development of Bharathanatyam, Practical Padavarnam, Practical Javali and Slokam, Practical - Ashtapadi and Thirupugazh, Theory Aspects of Dance in Tamil Literature, Practical Alarippu, Practical Jatiswaram and Sabdam Practical Padavarnam/ Swarajati and Slokam, Practical Keerthanam, Tevaram/ Kavadichindu and Javali, Theory Aesthetics of Bharathanatyam, Practical Nattuvangam of all learned Items, Elective Practical Choreography, Elective Practical Stage Performance, Project,Viva. The course completed, students can perform in various stages, movies and documentary shows. They can also open dance studios to teach aspiring dancers or teach in schools or colleges.
