Course
Mahatma Gandhi University Kottayam offers a two-year postgraduate degree in social work. The eligibility for applying for MSW is a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. The program is aimed at individuals who are already working in the social work field or desire to work in the welfare and development sectors. The course helps the students to work, undertake training, research, and consultancy in the areas of social science. The students could establish interaction between social scientists, planners, and policymakers through seminars, workshops, and conferences. The course equips the students with intervention skills, critical understanding of issues related to the family units, the elderly, children, and persons with disabilities. The topics under study are theory and practice of counseling, history, philosophy and fields of social work, project planning and management, social work research, and social statistics. Master of Social Work degree specializations includes human resource management, medical and psychiatric social work, rural and urban community development and school social work, urban and rural community development, industrial relations and labor welfare, personnel management, and so on. Organizations like UNESCO,WHO, UNICEF employ social development workers in campaign, awareness and project meant for developing countries. The various areas of employment for MSW graduates are hospitals, education sector, disaster management department, counseling centers, health industry, HR department of industries, gender issues association or groups, correction cells, mental hospitals, natural resource management companies, prisons,old age homes, NGOs and much more. The students could be employed as documentation and communication officer, district consultant, junior research fellow, professors, program coordinators, junior research fellows, project coordinators, senior manager-HR,and so on.
