Course

BDS course focuses on the field of Dental Science. It is a popular undergraduate Dentistry course, which, on completion, leads to a BDS degree and title of a Doctor (Dr).In India, it is the second most popular medical course, trailing MBBS. BDS course trains students to become capable of carrying out dental practice independently/under supervision of hospital. Skills taught in this course are- prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting teeth, mouth, jaws and other associated tissues. Surgery is also an integral part of this course.General medicine subjects are also a part of this course. Some such general medicine subjects are- anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and general surgery. In short, this course is a mixture of general medicine, clinical dentistry and surgery.

Eligibility

  • Candidates should be a citizen of India.
  • Overseas Citizens of India, who are registered under Section 7A of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (Central Act 57 to 1955) are eligible to apply for MBBS/BDS Degree Courses subject to the production of proof of such registration.
  • The Central Board of Secondary Education will prepare an All India Merit List of successful candidates of NEET (UG) – 2018 on the basis of the eligibility criteria provided by the Medical council of India and Dental Council of India as given in Graduate Medical Education Regulations-1997 issued under India Medical Council Act – 1956 and BDS Course Regulations, 2007 issued under the Dentists Act, 1948.
  • Admission to MBBS/BDS Degree Courses shall be based solely on marks obtained in the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG-2018).
  1. In order to be eligible for admission to MBBS/BDs Degree Courses for a particular academic year, it shall be necessary for a candidate to obtain minimum of marks at 50th percentile in National eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test to MBBS/BDS Courses held for the said academic year. However, in respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, the minimum marks shall be at 40th percentile. The percentile shall be determined on the basis of highest marks secured in the All India common merit list in the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test for admission to MBBS/BDS Degree Courses.
  2. To be eligible for admission to MBBS/BDS Degree Courses, a candidate must have passed in the subjects of Physics, chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology at the qualifying Examination. In respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, Backward Classes (Muslim) and Most Backward Class/Denotified Community, the minimum marks obtained in Physics, chemistry and Biology/Bio-technology taken together in qualifying examination shall be 40% instead of 50%.
  3. Provided when sufficient number of candidates in the respective categories fail to secure minimum marks as prescribed in National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test held for any academic year for admission to MBBS/BDS Degree Courses, the Central Government in consultation with Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India may at it s discretion lower the minimum marks required for admission to MBBS/BDS Degree Courses for candidates belonging to respective categories and marks so lowered by the Central Government shall be applicable for the said academic year only.

Career Prospects

After completing BDS course and internship, graduates are eligible to start practice as dentists in India. But it would be better to go for PG course, specialize and then start practice.Qualified and skilled dentists are in huge demand these days. One may find work in Government hospitals/clinics or Community health centres. Private hospitals/clinics provide more job opportunities. One may also choose to start private practice.Those who are interested in the field of teaching may take up the job of a lecturer. Doing PG course will be beneficial, if you are looking to build a career in the teaching sector. Pursuing advanced courses will also help one.
