Course
Rheumatology is a sub-specialty in pediatrics and internal medicine that is devoted to diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting bones, muscles and joints. Candidates who have completed DM in Rheumatology are called as Rheumatologists and these professionals mainly deal with heritable connective tissue disorders, vasculities, certain autoimmune diseases, soft tissue disorders and joint disorders.
Duration: 3 Years
Eligibility
- Post-graduation (MBBS or equivalent degree), completed from an institute recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) or any of the State Medical Councils.A minimum aggregate score of 55% (50% for SC/ST/OBC candidates) at the level of post-graduation.1- year compulsory rotating internship.
- Admission process is purely based on the merit and the medical colleges and universities conduct common entrance examination for the candidates.
Admission Process
Generally, in most of the colleges and institutes offering the course, admission is provided based on the candidate’s performance in a relevant entrance test, such as NEET PG, conducted at the national level, followed by a subsequent round of counselling.The round of counselling involves two additional rounds of Group Discussion and Personal Interview, wherein candidate’s general aptitude for the course is examined. A merit list is subsequently released issued by the institute allocating available seats to the qualifying candidates.

This is a rapidly growing medical specialty with advancements owing to new scientific methodologies for prior identification of diseases pertaining to rheumatology and immunology. Due to changes in the lifestyle, many people are facing joint related problems since most of them are working sitting in the same place for hours together in front of the computer or some of them spend most of the time in travelling in bikes. Many other factors have contributed towards the increasing incidence of Rheumatics disease in younger generation these days. This in turn increases the demand for Rheumatologists.
